Additional Safety Advice

Making your own weights is fun, economical and satisfying especially when it results in catches! However in order to keep safe what can potentially be a dangerous practice the following safety guidelines must be adhered to :-

Women at any stage of pregnancy must not be in the vicinity of molten lead with or without a fume mask.

Lead (sinkers) and aluminium (moulds) can have the appearance of being cold but still be very hot. Always ensure that sufficient cooling time has elapsed before handling both moulds and production sinkers with unprotected hands.

Protective clothing

Do not inhale molten lead fumes, wear a correctly rated fume mask, a dusk mask will not suffice.
Wear protective heat resistant gauntlet style gloves, eye goggles, and protective footwear.
Never mould with any skin exposed.

ALWAYS WEAR APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING.

NEVER MOULD UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL.

AVOID EXTERNAL PERSONS THAT MAY CAUSE A DISTRACTION

Moisture

Always store your moulds in a dry place, nevertheless heat the mould before filling with lead to ensure that any moisture has evaporated.

It cannot be stressed enough that no amount of water however small can be allowed to come into contact with molten lead, moisture expands when it comes into contact with hot metal, this will cause the molten metal to spatter over a surprisingly and dangerously wide area.

Melting pot

Always use a steel pot to melt lead in.

Pre-heat tools

Pre-heat all tools that will come into direct contact with molten lead.

After Use

Wash hands immediately after casting.

If casting has taken place inside a workshop or shed then the area around where the moulding has taken place should be wiped down afterwards with disposable cloths and a solution of domestic powdered automatic dishwasher detergent in warm water. (Dishwasher detergents are recommended because of their high phosphate content). Cloths should then be placed in sealed bags before ultimate disposal.
This is to remove any traces of residue lead dust that will settle after moulding has finished and should be carried out after a reasonable time period to allow the dust to settle. Only after cleaning should children, pregnant women and pets be re-admitted to the working area.

Wash hands again immediately after the clean up has taken place.

WARNING

Melting lead and casting lead objects will expose you and others in the area to lead, which is known to cause birth defects, other reproductive harm, and cancer.
